No More Fish?
Last night, I cooked tilapia for dinner. It was an experiment, I’ll grant you. I’ve hated fish for as long as I could remember and all forms of seafood. But my husband got me to try lobster, and it wasn’t half-bad. Not sure it was worth the $14.99 per pound, but doable.
Then we moved onto snow crab. Now that seafood, I like. It’s a little mix of sweet and salty, and when you dip it in butter? Heaven. :hungry:
Last, he got me to try shrimp. I’d had bad shrimp growing up (you know, the plastic fishy tasting stuff in egg rolls?) and wasn’t thrilled about it, but hey, I was game to give it another shot. Not bad. Can’t say I want it every week, but I can handle it.
So last night, we decided to give tilapia a try. Everyone said it’s a mild fish, very good, so we’d go for it. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on fish (e.g. salmon) because if we hated it, then I’d be out the money. So, tilapia it was. I went with a basic recipe, just butter, Old Bay seasoning, salt and pepper. Then I topped it with a little freshly squeezed lemon.
It seemed to cook just fine and flaked lightly when I pressed it with a fork. Everyone was game. But you know, it just didn’t do it for me. Nothing exciting there, just a textured fish with not a lot of flavor. My daughter and I ended up grilling some hot dogs, while the boys finished up. We opted not to cook it again.
It seemed that a lot of fish recipes were either very basic, like the one above, or very exotic, like they were trying to hide the flavor of the meat. I’m not sure what to think. Can’t say I’m eager to jump back on the bandwagon, but I’d like to know if you have a favorite fish. Should I just call it quits on the fish? Or is there something else I should try?
