Something to Make Your Heart Stop
The baby is upstairs napping. He was NOT happy about it when I first tried to put him down, and I finally decided to invoke the Power of the Car Seat(tm). I had a few errands to run at the grocery store and so I figured that would tire out Mr. Nosy Baby.
When I got to the grocery store, there were two ambulances and two Fire Chief trucks in the parking lot. They were trying to break into a car window. Apparently a baby was left inside, which just about made my heart stop, and I clutched Nosy Baby even tighter. This is, to me, the most devastating thing that could happen. A few years ago, a father drove to work and forgot about his baby in the infant seat. The baby was left in the car and died.
Putting myself in the mother’s shoes, I honestly don’t know if I could forgive a husband for that. I guess this woman did, and they had another baby later. The court acquitted the man because it was unintentional.
Thankfully, when we got out of the grocery store ten minutes later, the mother was there, and they got the baby out. Apparently she had somehow locked the keys inside the car with the baby still inside. When I left, she was holding the baby and crying. My heart went out to her, but most of all, I was glad the baby was all right.
And I gave my sleeping infant son an extra squeeze when we got home.
