What’s This?
Okay, can somebody tell me the proper name for this silver covered dish? I’m writing a scene where the hero receives a covered dish like this one. But what’s the technical name for it? It’s not a chafing dish. I could call it a silver covered platter. But it’s dome-shaped, and I’d really like to use the correct terminology.
Anyone? Anyone?
I’m tempted to call it the silver dome-shaped cover thingie.

How big is it? I have something like that that’s a butter dish, but I would think you would probably have pegged that
Still, I’m guessing the size is going to play into the name — is the dish underneath plate sized? Though, honestly, I’ve always just called them domes.
Not helpful, I realize. Sorry.

Hmm . . . I don’t know the proper name for it. I would call it a silver dome-covered serving dish or a serving dish with a silver dome cover. I know, I’m not very helpful either.
Michelle Styles Says:
It is the cover for a platter. So the combination is a covered platter. In this case it is a silver platter. It used to keep food warm or cold. The cover is removed when the food is served.
A tureen as in a soup tureen has a different sort of lid.
Platters really start being used in the 17th century.
Hope this helps.
Pat Says:
It is called a Silver Dome Plate Cover. They used to come in 10 inch and 12 inch sizes.
Missie Says:
It depends on where the hero was registered at.
Michelle Says:
Beth, it’s about 10-12 inches wide. I’m thinking I’ll just have to make up my own description.
Thanks everyone!
