Food Allergies in Infants?
After another four days of the baby waking up every two hours, I’m beginning to wonder if this could be food allergies? Could the baby be lactose intolerant? I think when your brain cells have been zapped, you’re willing to try anything. My poor little turkey has been ripping out the gas like you wouldn’t believe. It’s what wakes him up screaming, again and again. I took him off most baby foods last week when he was tossing his cookies and he went back to exclusive nursing. He’s never had any food allergies before, but I’ve heard that these can develop out of the blue.
Have any of your children had food allergies? What were the symptoms?
So, a funny story for you. I had set out a bucket full of cleaning supplies in the laundry room for the woman I’ve hired to come and clean every two weeks (I still hear the angels rejoicing at the thought of a clean house. :snoopy: It totally rocks and WHY did I not do this sooner?). Anyway, my husband came back and saw the bucket. “What’s this for?” he asked. Before I could answer, six-year-old quipped, “For inspiration?”

Michelle I have had another thought (now that is scary for me) My eldest daughter wouldn’t sleep when the light was off. We ended up getting a night light for her and she would sleep right through.
In regards to food allergies I know that I couldn’t breast feed one of my babes because it would upset their tummies no matter what I ate. We moved her to a formula I think it was about 4 we tried before we found one she could tolerate. I know she wasn’t thriving and was always hungry but for other symptoms…
And just in case you’re wondering I have 4 daughters so lots of different experiences.
I really hope you get some sleep soon and it just isn’t poor sleeping habits that is the hardest to work with.

No human kids, so no experience with human babies. But I do know someone whose baby had a problem with the formula she was giving him.
Good luck getting this sorted out. I’m sending you both lots of positive healing energy (Light).

Lots of hugs for you and the little one. I have no suggestions to offer at all – though I would think food allergies would be accompanied by a rash or hives or something else. Still…worth asking your ped.
As for the six year old…wonder where he got that quick tongue.

Neither of my children had food allergies so I can’t be of any help with this part of it. Myself, I am lactose intolerant. It took my doctor almost 6 years to figure out my problem. The gas and stomach cramps were horrible and the constant going to the bathroom. If it were me I would ask my doctor about this. Not only do I hope you get some sleep but even more so, I hope your little one can get rid of the pain he so obviously is having.

Hi, my son has various allergies to things and one of those things was formula milk. His symptoms came on suddenly and included projectile vomiting and chronic diarrhoea (there seemed so much more coming out than going in). He ended up in hospital where they had to prescribe a checmical milk that tasted foul to us but he seemed to be able to tolerate it. Even now (17 years on) he still avoids certain foods that I now suspect he was allergic to – as was proved by testing some foods a while ago. I’d definitely say talk to your doctor – it’s better than ending up in hospital with them.
Great books by the way. I’ve also really enjoyed your blog since stumbling across it.

I hope you can figure out what’s causing the little one’s problems. Poor guy.

My youngest didn’t have allergies, but food intolerances. That’s why I nursed her for 2.5 years. No gluten, dairy, soy along with tons of other stuff. She didn’t gain any weight over a three month period and was miserable. Since I was nursing, I couldn’t eat any of that stuff either. I lost 30 pounds and felt so much better! Just remember what you eat so does the baby so try cutting out things for your diet and see if it makes a differences. It won’t be overnight either. Give it two weeks. And keep track of what you eat and the baby’s responses.
BTW, doctors don’t like talking about that kind of stuff. We ended up at a naturopath who really helped us figure things out.

My daughter didn’t have any food allergies, so I can’t offer much help there, but one of my friends has a son who has had a lot of problems with food allergies – he’s two now and they’ve really been through the ringer with him. First no milk then no soy and it just kept going. I still think they’re trying to figure stuff out.
I LOVE the comment your daughter made!

Hi Michelle,
Anyway try with soya milk, perhaps he has coholics.
I am so sorry for your baby. Poor boy
A big hug

Oh heavens, Michelle, all three of my kids had food allergies. I think there is a good chance that is what you are seeing. My eldest and youngest were allergic to cow’s milk. All three were allergic to poultry and eggs, my youngest was also allergic to soy. I think you are looking at allergies. The gas sounds like a milk-based issue. Egg white did the same thing to my kids. Good luck. If you are using milk, try switching to goat’s milk. If that isn’t available, try almond milk. My daughter who was allergic to cow and soy tolerated almond milk just fine. Rice milk too except it tastes like crud.
Kelly Boyce Says:
My sister’s baby had the same symptoms and he turned out to be lactose intolerant. I think she switched him to soy milk if I recall and it vastly improved.
