Baking Creativity

I signed up to bring in treats for my son’s kindergarten Halloween party next week (Oh, whoops…I mean FALL CELEBRATION). Yesterday, I spoke to one of the room mothers and found out that the teachers want the food to be cute. In other words, not a pack of Oreos, but something decorated and fall-themed. It could involve candy corn or other candies.

Okay, so I wasn’t planning on sending in Oreos. Nevertheless, a part of me wants to send in something really cool. My back-up plan is decorated cupcakes or oversized frosted cookies. When I was in grade school, I remember my mom made these really tasty pumpkin cookies that we decorated ourselves. Mine resembled Freddie Krueger, I believe. Ah, fun with candy corn fangs…

I’m wondering if there are other things I haven’t considered. These are five-year-olds, so I wouldn’t want it to be too messy. But I’m trying to think outside the box a little. Popcorn balls? Caramel apples? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe Rice Krispy pumpkins?

(In other news, I had a great writing day last night. I’m within 35 pages of finishing the book. :snoopy: )

Ooh, the idea of rice Krispy pumpkins sounds good. Just add a little orange food coloring to the marshmallow mixture and then spread it out, cut it out with a pumpkin cooking cutter and use chocolate frosting and a cake decorating bag to squeeze out the eyes, nose and mouth. Hey, I might try doing that! LOL

I haven’t had to make anything for my stepson’s class yet. I usually make chocolate cupcakes around fall and get cream cheese icing and dye it orange and maybe put a candy corn or two or the little pumpkins on top as decoration, or find those chocolately sprinkles. I think last year I used brown and yellow M&Ms to make them look like jack-o-lantern faces.

    Congrats on almost being done.

And you don’t want cooking advice from me.

Rice Krispie treats of any kind get my vote! (Now I’m craving them.) :snoopy:

Congratulations on the burst of creativity, Michelle.

You don’t want cooking advice from me, either. However, I’m a great taste-tester. Ha!

Rice Krispy pumpkins sound cool! :chocolate:

I’m making oreo spiders which I found on someone’s blog (http://saffronhut.blogspot.com/2006/10/trick-or-treat-oreo-spiders.html).

You can try using FamilyFun.com - they have unique, fun, & easy ideas! Like the ‘monster hands’ or ‘apple bites’ combined with the ‘edible eyeballs’! ha ha ha…

  8. Kelly Boyce Says:

This will probably highlight my serious lack of baking skills - but can you just throw some orange food dye in to a batch of cookie dough?

  9. Michelle Says:

Linette–love the Oreo spiders! Those are adorable. :) I’ll look at Family Fun, too.

Kelly–that’s also another possibility. I could probably cut up green gumdrops and make little pumpkin cookies. :streamer:
