Wednesday Wonderings
It’s been a busy week! Between getting ready for my school’s Open House and trying to finish my AA’s by this morning, my time has been completely sucked away. AA’s, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, are Author Alterations. My publisher sends a printed copy of my manuscript, and I have to do a final proofread for typos, misspellings, or other word issues. (It’s a little different from galleys or line edits, since the changes are already typed in.) I’m not allowed to do any story revisions, per se, at this point.
My books are copyedited out of London, which is always an adventure for me since I’m not always familiar with British spellings. Thank goodness for dictionary.com because I’m constantly looking at spellings and thinking, “Do they really spell it that way?” For example, the word jewelry is spelled jewellery. The “our” combinations like colour and honour don’t bother me because I’m used to them. I’ll never forget the first time I saw maneuver spelled as manouevre. I just about passed out.
Anyway, I sent those off last night and celebrated by watching a movie with my husband. It was very much a guy film, the movie “300,” but seeing really strong, buff men fighting was good eye candy.
I could imagine getting a few romance heroes out of those men, even if it was quite gory.
Today I was *supposed* to get my gestational diabetes test done. My OB’s office said that as long as I had fasted an hour beforehand, it would be fine. This is the first time I’ve ever had it done in the hospital because apparently they’ve changed all the guidelines. I didn’t realize that A) you have to have an appointment and B) you can’t have it done unless you’ve fasted for eight hours. Darn that cup of coffee I had this morning! When I called the lab, they told me that it would mess up the results.
So, I’ll get that done Friday instead. I’ve heard horror stories about the glucose drink and I am NOT looking forward to it. Ick.
Mel tagged me with a me-me, but I think I’ll share something else instead. Hers was a middle-name me-me where you describe characteristics of yourself by using your middle name. Instead, I’ll share with you the fact that Michelle is my middle name. My real first name is actually Mary. I’ve never been called Mary by anyone, but it used to drive me nuts when people who didn’t know me would call me by that name. I swore I’d never name any of my children in that way because I remember how frustrating that was.
What about you? What’s your middle name?

Holly Says:
Oh I remember the dreaded gestational diabetes test…I did it not once, but twice. The first time was the 1 hour one, but I had drank something or other that caused me to fail it the first time. I had to take the 3 hour one after that, but learned from the mistake of drinking just about anything, or doing anything that could mess it up. I passed the 3 hour with no problem. The drink is nasty and you’re supposed to drink it ubber cold and ubber fast…YUCK! Best of luck with yours.
As for middle names…mine is Raye. My mom loved the 1961 movie Back Street starring Susan Hayward and John Gavin. The main character was a fashion designer who’s name on her store was spelled in lower case letters- rae. My mom loved that, but when she named me, she couldn’t remember how the name was spelled and she added a y to mine, giving me Raye instead, which I love.
Melissa Mc Says:
I had to do the gestational diabetes test at the hospital with two of my three pregnancies. It’s not so bad, just long. Make sure you take something to do. And bring a sandwich or something to eat as soon as your finished. Good luck.
Leanne Says:
I had to do the gestational diabetes test last year too, but it’s not that bad. Kinda like drinking Sunkist with a lot more sugar,(lots), but it is long, so make sure you take a book or magazine or something to do while you wait, and like Melissa said, bring something to eat as soon as you’re done, because you’ll be ready for it. As for middle name, mine is LeAnne, my mom said they spelled it the French way, ( I don’t know.) My first is Christen, and I hate it when people call me that. Hope everyone has a great day today.
LeAnne
Melissa Says:
My middle name is Anne with an E!
And as to “300″…

Wow. I love that movie for it’s amazing hot bodies…er…plot!
Donna Alward Says:
The drink isn’t so bad. It’s just a little sweet. And it’s so worth it. The effects of developing gestational diabetes can be truly devastating.
My middle name is Lynn. I hate it. Everyone in my class had middle names of either Lynn or Dawn. Sigh.

Tori Lennox Says:
I think “maneuver” looks funny no matter HOW you spell it. *g*
My middle name is Sue. Not Susan. Not Suzanne. Just plain Sue. How boring!
jeanne s. Says:
Oh I had that done 20 years ago but back then you had to injest like an entire large size tube of it - ugh yuk. I also was told that I could eat anything I wanted before the test (I asked him repeatedly about that) and had donuts for breakfast. yeah, test came out all screwy and I had to do it again. It’s been 20 years and I’m still made about it lol.
My middle name is Constance which I’ve always hated. I was named after my grandmother but her real name was Concentina - I would have liked that better but they felt they had to Americanize it.
jeanne s. Says:
ok meant mad not made
Lexi Connor Says:
I’m Lyn!
I’ve heard WONDERFUL things about 300. I’ll stick it on my “must watch” list.
Jean Says:
My middle name is Marie and my family always calls me Jean Marie. After eight years of starting the school year off telling the teacher I was Jean Marie, not Jean, I gave up in high school and became just plain Jean. Dad said they should have hyphenated the two names into one. But that probably wouldn’t have worked. My sil David-John, often gets called David. He doesn’t answer to it though. David is his father.
Nicole Reising Says:
Hi Michelle!
Middle name - Marie… due to allergy med’s… I had to ‘think’ about that for a moment! How pathetic is that!!!?
I loved your butt video! I passed it on to some other friends.
Hope your test goes alright! I hated doing that. And your thoughts on the kid’s and their personality sure hit home. I have three and all three are of totally different thoughts, likes, and mannerisms. Its absolutely amazing to me and I find I often marvel at the differences. All three have the same two parents yet they are all so very different.

Crystal* Says:
Middle name is Ann. Boring that.
But my chickens’ middle names? I gave them each two. So here they are:
Oldest Chicken: Mary Irene (Mary for one grandma. Irene for a great-grandma)
Middle Chicken: Ann Marie (Ann for yours truly…Marie because it’s a derivative of Mary-after that Grandma)
Baby Chicken: Amber Michelle (Amber after my sister. Michelle ’cause I just like the way it looked)

Heidi Dahlquist Says:
My middle name is Christina (so is my grandmothers middle name, and my greatgrandma, and my great great grandma’s first name was christina—the Irish side of the family). How many of us have family names? On the rare occassions my grandmother likes to tell embarassing stories about me to family and friends, she will call me Christina. When she starts the story with “Christina” I know I’m in trouble and run and hide from promising embarassment.
As for the diabeties test, I’ve never had children (not by choice), so I’ve never had the test, but I have heard about how bad the solution is they make you drink. I can tell you diabeties tests in general suck, and I know because I’m diabetic. I feel for everyone who has to have diabeties testing!!
Christina Says:
Hi Michelle,
Sorry about the drink. Yuck!
As for the middle name Renee. I am using it for my pen name.
Jill Myles Says:
I’m afraid I’m a ‘Candice’ after Candice Bergen. Bleh.
Oh, and I wanted to say that I saw your book at Wal-Mart today! They were down to only two copies left - so I grabbed one. Looks like you’ll have a good sell-through!!
