Pregnancy Craziness

I am at the stage where I stare at my wardrobe and no longer wonder about what I want to wear. I’m at the stage where I question what FITS. And that, my friends, is very limited at the moment. I think I am likely a fashion disaster at the moment because I am doing whatever it takes to avoid maternity wear. At 13 weeks, this is a losing battle, but I do not want to wear the elastic belly pants until I absolutely have to. Thank goodness for the hip-hugger pants that came into fashion. I am living in those, and trying to find various tops that will actually cover the baby bump.

Maternity wear is an evil trick on mothers-to-be. They tell you, “Oh, just buy whatever size you wore normally and just buy it in maternity, and you’ll be fine.” Right. When I was 8 months pregnant with my son, 6 weeks left to go, not a single pair of my maternity pants fit. I remember sobbing like an idiot to my husband that I was too fat to wear maternity clothes and I just couldn’t take it. Being a man, he suggested that I go out and buy a larger size. I contemplated throwing a stapler at him for the remark, because when you’ve outgrown your maternity wear, things are pretty darn bad.

But I learned that there are three stages. The first trimester stage where your pants get tighter, but you can basically get by. The early second trimester when maternity wear sags on you, but nothing else fits. And then there’s third trimester when your hips get to be the size of a dump truck and you have to revert to the Extra Large Maternity Mama San Pants.

I’m beginning to think that dresses are the way to go…

For those of you mothers out there, what were your favorite maternity clothes? Most hated?

I’m not normally a wearer of dresses, but dressed were my favorite when I was pregnant. I also happened to be pregnant in the era of tent dresses, so the dresses didn’t automatically shout baby, even if the belly did.

My favorite pregnancy outfit was a two piece bathing suit! But I live in California. ;)

    BTW CONGRATS!!

Favorite and Maternity clothes were never in the same sentence for me…

Congrats - I didn’t realize you were expecting!

My sister, who is very fashion conscience, just went through two back to back pregnancies so I got dragged to Thyme Maternity Wear a lot. I was surprised at some of the great clothes they had there, but she had a hard time finding pants she liked too. She ended up finding a few pair and just alternating them, but there was one pair that for the first month didn’t quite fit and she was walking thru the house and they actually fell down. It was too funny. Lucky for her she was in teh house and not out on the town!

I loved my jeans from Motherhood Maternity. They didn’t look like preg jeans anywhere but in the belly area, and they looked great with tshirts or dressy tops. I spent money on a few great tops from Motherhood, then I bought cheap tshirts from Old Navy, Target and Walmart for the remainder of my wardrobe. I found that it’s really important to have at least 2-3 things that you feel like you look fantastic in during the bloatfest :chocolate:, even if they are a bit more money.

Also, when preg with my son 12yrs ago, Sears had great mat clothes. Then they discontinued the line, so during preg with Alison 3yrs ago, I couldn’t go there. But now? They just started a new line at Sears, and some of the stuff looks really cute. Try there and see if the prices and styles suit you.

And lucky for your hub that you didn’t have a knife handy.

I had a hand-me-down pair of dress pants that I loved, and a crepe never iron it blouse to go with that had tiny pink flowers on it…I always felt cute in that.

I seriously though went with leggings (not the clingy kind) a lot because they were SOOOOO comfy…and maternity tops made from jersey because they were soft and so unrestricting feeling. Far worse than maternity pants is maternity underwear. *shudder*

Michelle - I so understand what you are talking about having just had this for nine months!!! To be honest if I could live in my jammys I would - can’t wait to peel clothes off and jump into jammies (I cried when my fave pair wouldn’t fit). Otherwise I’m living in some fave maternity jeans and a couple of favourite expansive tops.

Right now I’m the size of a helium filled elephant (my mother found me some kaftan sized nightshirts that have been superb). But I don’t love them enough to wear them outdoors! Yet!

Luckily I’ve only got six days to go (unless I go overdue).

I’m sure you look fab in whatever you wear. Jude x

When I was pregnant with my daughter my mom ended up giving me a lot of oversize clothes and I couldn’t find maternity clothes in these parts for anything, so for pants I went with the loose legging pants too with the elastic waist. I would’ve loved to have been showing a lot in the summer cause I would’ve gotten me the shortalls with lots of belly room! LOL

I really hated all my clothes when pregnant.

Hope you find something you really like and that is comfortable. Sounds like you got quite a few good suggestions to check out.

Congratulations!!!! I didn’t know you were pregnant!!!

I loved the knits, and I made a few sundresses, but gosh, that was a million years ago!

I had these great pants a friend gave me (hand me downs). I think they were Belly Basics brand or something like that. And another friend gave me her fave tank top with all this pretty embroidery around the neckline that I wore all the time.
