Friday the 13th

Amazingly, I did make it to page 314 last night. Goal today is page 318. :typing:

So, it’s Friday the 13th and my poor beleaguered students are having a test today. (cue the evil laughter) I’ve never really been a superstitious person. Oh, sure I collected 4-leaf clovers like any bored child in the outfield of a softball game during gym class. But truly, I’ll walk under ladders, pet black cats, etc. None of that bothers me. The only superstition I used to have was when I submitted a book manuscript to a publisher. I would talk to the book, tell it to win an editor’s heart over, and blow it a kiss before I sealed it up. Wacky, I know. But hey, it worked!

With a little bit of online research, I found that there really wasn’t a superstition about Friday the 13th until the 1900s. Before that, the number 13 was considered unlucky (sources say because Judas was the 13th guest at the Last Supper). Fridays were considered days of ill-fortune because of Good Friday. But no one really put them together until recently.

Just for fun, the fear of Friday the 13th is called: paraskavedekatriaphobia. I know. You really needed to know that today, didn’t you? :rotf:

So what superstitions do you have? Or do you ignore them?

Interesting tidbits about Friday the 13th! Like Bonnie, I sometimes knock on wood. I also toss spilled salt over my shoulder.

    paraskavedekatriaphobia

I’m glad I never had that on a spelling test! What a mouthful!

Like the others, I knock on wood, but that’s about it. I love Friday the 13th. :)

Being Irish and Scottish, I have tons of superstitions. I’m not afraid of Friday the 13th. I wont open an umbrella in the house. I have a cross above my bed, I always wear a celtic cross around my neck from Ireland. I feel unafe without it.

I have some quirky things too. I poured a salt circle around my house, its a magickal protection barrier. My neighbors thought I was nuts. I have an Irish corn protection symbol handing above my front door, a gift from my aunt when she visited Ireland (I’ve had it since I was 10). I even have celtic crosses throughut my house for protection. Oh, and I will NOT walk under a latter. My hubbie will open an umbrella in the house just to freak me out.

    Heidi

No superstitions here - I just think they’re fun.

Knocking on wood, no opening an umbrella inside, playing the same song as I print out the first finished copy of each manuscript. (Hm, maybe I should change that since it’s clearly not getting me published yet!) I know I’ve got some others, I just can’t think of them!

Michelle, I love your story of talking to your manuscript and blowing it a kiss! I might have to start that.

That’s quite a word! I wonder who came up with it! lol

    I’m not at all superstitious!
