The holiday season is upon us…

I braved Black Friday with my sister-in-law for the second time in a row. There’s something absolutely CRAZY about venturing out at 6:00 in the morning to go shop. I love shopping for my children, but shopping for adults is really hard. I think you get to a point where you just don’t need anything. It’s more fun to buy things like tickets to see a musical or “event” types of gifts.

We started decorating our house for Christmas. :santa: I actually am one of the sick, demented people who really enjoys decorating. We have garlands strung along the banisters of the stairs with ribbon and lights. I have wreaths on the outdoor windows and my Christmas tree is up. :xmastree: I keep trying to convince my husband to hang icicle lights around the windows and on the roof of our house. For whatever reason, the man is reluctant to climb a twenty-foot ladder, dangling above certain death. :flying: Huh. Wonder why?

So I am resigned to stringing colored lights on the bushes and casting envious looks at the illuminated reindeer that my neighbors have put up. :rudolph: Some people go all out and have inflatable snow globes with real snow blowing inside. And there are the crazy neighbors who look like they need to charge admission to see the thousands of lights they’ve put up.

What kind of holiday decorations do you put up? And what are the tackiest decorations you’ve seen?

LOL… I love decorating for Christmas too. We’ve got it started, but a football game interrupted it, so hopefully we’ll have it done by the beginning of the week. Someone sent this to me last year. I don’t know if tacky is the word. It’s certainly festive. http://media.putfile.com/WizardsofWinter-SM

I don’t like decorating for Christmas. My mother always went all out and she started right after Thanksgiving. With three kids, I have enough to worry about without thinking about decorations. Since they’ve been around, I have lost countless decorations.

There are all sorts of competitions around here for decorated houses. Some of them are just grotesque, they are so busy. The worst I saw last year was a Christmas tree up in someone’s house in February. Yes, that was no typo, February.

BTW, rooted for your team on Saturday. I despise USC and really wanted to see them lose.

I havent’ started yet but will have a tree trimming party on the 16th. My husband refuses to do outside lights so I overdo the inside of the house. I hate the garish colored inflatible decorations that are huge and end up half deflated.

When we boughtour first house years ao our girls were still young-uns. We made yard characters out of wood and painted them. We had carolers, a howling dog and a manger scene and snowman, with real scarf. My dh cut out the figures after we drew them onto plywood and the girls helped paint them all. We had lights in the yard and my mid-dd had a pine tree planted that they stood around all lit up. In the second year dh made a santa climbing down the chimney and a sleigh with Rudolph. Over the years our lovely masterpieces have aged beyond repair, but those memories of sharing the creations are forever with us. Now, we do a few outdoor lights and the tree, nativity and garland stuff inside.

Rene–that game was painful to watch. I kept hoping our guys would get it together, but no such luck. Sigh.

Jeanne–I’ve seen the type you’re talking about. Ugh! They look really garish, don’t they?

Lisa–Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun!

April–I’m off to go check out that link!

I LOVE to decorate for Christmas. In fact, that’s the only holidays that I DO decorate. I always make myself wait until after Thanksgiving, though.

I kept hearing about this Black Friday and was going ‘what the heck is that’. Then they explained it on the news while showing these frantic crowds rushing through the stores as the doors opened. Frightening…

We meant to get our decorations up this weekend, but it didn’t happen. I think we probably fall somewhere in the middle - just normal decorations, though we did finally find some light nets for our bushes, so that’ll be fun this year. Of course, hubs has to rewire the outside GFCI first.

Our across the street neighbors have the deer - the dogs are convinced they’re real and stand at the window barking for the entire month of December.
