The Best Birthday Present Ever
Today is my birthday, and in all honesty, it’s the best one I’ve ever had. One month ago, I sold my first book. When my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I couldn’t really think of anything (Okay, maybe some diamond earrings, but I digress…). Becoming a published author was always my life-long dream, and to finally have that in my hands is just amazing. Can you see me still smiling?
Seeing as it’s my birthday and a time for presents, I’m going to host a virtual birthday party. For cake, we’re having Death by Chocolate. In reality, my husband is baking me my cake today. It’s a Chocolate Turtle cake, topped with melted caramel, chocolate chips, and pecans. Mmmm….Beth gave me the recipe for this version of sin. But the cake is a little complicated. It involves whipping egg whites, using cake flour and buttermilk, and I’m wondering how successful my engineer husband will be. To him, cooking is chemistry. If you follow the directions, you’ll get it right. That’s true, assuming you have good instructions. We’ll see what kind of cake I end up with!
Then we’re taking the kids out to a Hibachi grill dinner at Japan Samurai (my choice). I love watching the chefs toss eggs and make flaming onion volcanoes. My husband just hopes the children don’t catch on fire (I second that thought!).
What’s the best birthday present you’ve ever received in your life?

Kelly Says:
Happy birthday!!
Mine unfortunately falls right after Christmas and 3 days after my brother’s. So we only ever got one gift and I can’t remember anything that really stands out. Now my sister’s b-day is in July and she always cleaned up.
beth Says:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Don’t know that I’ve gotten a “best birthday present ever” honestly…just wanted to send hubs good luck vibes for the cake! How adventurous! Let us know how it turns out (I’m sure he’ll do great though, like you said, he’s an engineer.) I’ll keep my fingers crossed for no kiddo flambe, as well.
Man…that cake is almost worth the drive down to wish you happy birthday in person…tempting!
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
Happy Birthday, Michelle!!!
Melissa Says:
Happy birthday, Michelle! That cake sounds DIVINE.
Hmm…best birthday present…I think it was my surprise 16th party. I had no idea my mom planned it and it was a blast.
Emma Sinclair Says:
Happy Birthday!!
You’ve got a sweet husband. Mine knows enough not even to try - not even from a box. I guess it’s thoughtful that he wouldn’t want me cleaning his mess in the kitchen on my birthday!
Rene Says:
Happy Birthday!!! My husband doesn’t bake anymore, I’m the baker in our house.
I don’t like birthdays, never have, even as a child, so I try to keep them lowkey. I usually try to pass on the presents. I will say my first iPod was one of my favorite presents.
Stacy Says:
Oh HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! My husband doesn’t even try to bake, and I prefer it that way LOL although I must say the turtle cake sounds drooling delicious!!
I got married two weeks before my birthday so that would have to be my best present ever LOL
Crystal* Says:
Happy Birthday!!!
Hey! Where are all the festive smilies? Hmmmmm. I’ve obviously missed something.
My best birthday present? When I turned thirty, and I swear…EVERYONE wished me a Happy Birthday. EVERYONE. My kids were soliciting strangers and everyone was so nice. It was incredible. I had a smile on my face the entire day.
My best friend’s mom got me a cake. I don’t remember any concrete presents. But the feelings were so much more important.
Grins*

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
My best birthday present was a cake mix birthday cake. My 20th birthday, my dh and I were just married and 3,000 miles away from our families. He bought a cake mix and since he had never baked anything in his life, he asked a neighbor in our married student housing who we had just met once if she would help him bake it. It made my day.
chris Keach Says:
Happy, happy birthday! I hope you’ve had a wonderful day.

My husband is the baker and he makes amazing stuff… Just thinking about it makes me FAT.
I don’t have a favorite present as much as I have a favorite place to be, which is a lake up in Washington where we usually go in the summer.
india Says:
Very happy birthday Michelle! Your joy is infectious and I’m sitting here with a big smile on my face having read your post. Have a great day!
Michelle Says:
Thanks everyone! The man came through. He got me a Barnes and Noble gift certificate, along with other goodies, and we took the kids out to dinner. It was a great day!
Sharon Says:
Happy birthday Michelle, that cake sounds yummy, enjoy.
Kathy Holmes Says:
Happy birthday, Michelle! And a book deal is a fabulous birthday present. I hope to have one myself someday. So far my best birthday present was our little kitty, Lovey, soon after our special Ginger went to the Rainbow Bridge.
Teresa Says:
Happy Birthday :bananadance::bananadance::bananadance:
The cake sounds yummy!!
I think my best b-day present ever was the pendant my sweetie gave me that match my engagement ring. It was a combined 10th anniversary/b-day present. I don’t wear a lot of jewellery, but this just took my breath away. I never expected it as we tend to give fairly small gifts.
April Says:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
And thanks for sharing the virtual cake. Yum! I’m sure you’ll be wearing that happy smile for quite a while, and I’m so glad that you get to! Woo Hoo!:bananadance:

Belated birthday wishes Michelle.
