To Trend or Not to Trend

11 pages of writing for me today. :woot: I rewarded myself by going shopping at Old Navy. Okay, technically I was there to buy a birthday gift for my niece, but I had to window shop for myself, too.

Every time I go into a store like that, I have this wild urge to throw caution (and all fashion sense) to the wind. Electric purple flip flops with rhinestones! Orange bikinis with camouflage ties! Crocheted tops and animal print capris! I would love to be a hippy, trend-setting chick. For whatever reason, I apparently am doomed to buy normal clothes.

Why can’t I buy the funky Paris Hilton sunglasses and look trendy instead of possessed by the devil? I think it comes down to attitude. I’m just a blue-jean wearin’, T-shirt kind of girl. The wildest skirt I own is red with a black ribbon and some white swirling things. My husband just shakes his head at me in bewilderment. “Why would you want to wear that?” he asks. I believe if it were up to him, I’d be wearing a Burka.

I’m definitely the one to buy clothes in our household. I probably buy more clothes for my husband than he does for himself. (There’s something really fun about shopping for your significant other. Oh, the power!) :kneel: But truthfully I don’t do it all that often. Whenever I need an article of clothing or shoes, I can’t find it. It’s always when I don’t need something that I end up buying it. Like the other day when I was dragged, kicking and screaming into a Talbot’s Outlet Store. There was a melon-colored short-sleeved dress for $3. Yes, THREE, people. Okay, so there were probably fifty dresses and all of Washington D.C. will be wearing it. But it was $3, so who cares? I could mow the lawn in it and it wouldn’t matter. Hot diggety.

What’s the best sale item you’ve ever bought?

No amazing sale items, unfortunately, just wanted to commiserate on being doomed to be a plain ol’ jeans and t-shirt gal. :) At least you could pull off some of the trendier fashions - I have a feeling people would stop me on the street and say, “Go home. No one wants to see that.” (Which is often what I feel like stopping and saying to the girls I see on the street with their thongs and bare bellies hanging out all over the place.)

    I think I’m getting old.:loser:

The only time I was ever trendy was when my roommate told me what to buy. :) And since I haven’t seen her or talked to her in over 10 years, trendy has flown right out the window.

However, why would you want to look even remotely like Paris Hilton? :rotfl:

I’m not trendy either, but I have big ole’ eyes and I can never find sunglasses to block out the sun. So I did spring for a “off-brand” pair of those big sunglasses that are in style. And I’ve decided that I’ll just have to be behind the times when they’re out, because finally the sun is blocked! It’s that or wear the goggles you get from Wally world that make you look like your blind…:batman:

Of course, that’s as close to “trendy” as I’ve gotten. (you need a geeky smile)

I’m not trendy and I’m late…lucky you, Michelle to get to to go GMC and Hero’s Journey…you might have noticed I admire both!

  5. Stacy Says:

I am sooooo not trendy. I probably have four pairs of shoes all together.

Excellent work on the writing front!:dancingfool:

Best sale item I ever got was my winter coat. I got it at the Army/Navy surplus. It’s a forest green wool cadet coat that’s fitted and warm, but lightweight. And it was all mine for the whopping expenditure of….$0.99.

I can relate to your shopping problems. If I need something, it takes me forever to find it and I get so frustrated. However, when I’m out without the intention of shopping, I can’t help but find all kinds of cool (and not so cool) stuff. As far as trendy goes, I’m pretty conservative.

  8. Peggy Says:

Gosh, I can’t think of the last time I got a real good deal. In general I don’t buy anything that isn’t a good deal. It’s been years (maybe never) that I bought something not on sale.

  9. Melissa Says:

Nope, not trendy. I try. Unfortunately, I can’t wear most of the trendy stuff because my body isn’t that size anymore!

Way to go on the writing! :dancingfool:

One of my best buys was from an outlet store. Something like a $90 dress for $10. Snatched that sucker right up. Good for my shopping soul. Feeds the beast if you know what I mean.

A dress for $3? And you only bought one?

My booty doesn’t fit in trendy clothes - not that I care since “trendy” clothes nowadays seems to mean “everyone knows what kind of underwear I’m wearing.”

Frankly though, I’d be surprised if there was anything in my closet that I paid over $25 for. I’m a sale rack shopper.

  12. Rene Says:

Oh, my favorite sale purchase was at Hilo Hatties in Hilo, Hawaii. I found a cute, long dress on the clearance rack for $4. This dress originally went for $50. Talk about luck. As it was, we were on a cruise at the time and dh decided we should participate in the “renewing vows” ceremony they were going to have that night:roll:, so the dress came in handy.
