Birthday Girl
Today is my daughter’s 2nd birthday.
Okay, all together now: Awwwwww!
I’m baking a birthday cake this morning. It was so hard to come up with the right recipe. She loves chocolate (that, of course, is a hereditary trait) and I wanted to do something a little more special than just a plain chocolate cake. After much debate and searching through numerous cookbooks, I decided upon a Mississippi Mud Cake. Devil’s food cake, topped with marshmallow creme, then hot chocolate frosting poured on top and sprinkled with pecans….Mmmmmm…:hungry:
My family grew up with pies. Cherry pie, pear pie, peach pie (my personal favorite), lemon meringue…you name it. We were all about pie, not cake. Once, we made my mother a birthday pie instead of a cake.
I did make “Death By Chocolate” once.
I will say this–the directions were amazing. It took me two days to make all seven layers, but the recipe would tell you exactly what you needed to do. Blend in a food processor for thirty-seven seconds (that sort of thing). It was great. And I learned that when you’re making complicated recipes, the quality of chocolate really does matter. You can’t substitute melted chocolate chips for melted chocolate bars (I tried that once). But in the end, you come with a great dessert.
On the writing front, I wrote another 10 pages yesterday. That’s a total of 21 pages in two days.
Gotta love that. I’m not sure how much I’ll manage today with all the birthday stuff, but I’ll plant myself in a chair and write until 8:00 a.m. After that, lots to do!
But I do have a question before I go. What’s your favorite kind of cake? Or are you a pie person?

kacey Says:
Peach pie. Number one favorite. Then my grandmother’s chocolate cake with homemade fudge icing.
Happy birthday to your daughter! What a cutie!!
Michelle Styles Says:
HappyBirthdya to your daughter. Two can be a really cute age except when they become changeling children.
I hope she has a wonderful day.
Birthday cakes around here are most often carrot with creamcheese icing.
Kelly Says:
I really like cake. But I loooooove homemade pie. Apple, blueberry, rhubarb. My sister did a peach/apple combo last year that was amazing. Now I have a craving…
Hope your daughter had a great birthday - she’s a cutie!
Peggy Says:
Toss up between Dutch Apple Pie and Butter Pecan Cake.
Happy Birthday to your daughter. I’m going through the terrible two’s with my boy (30 months) right now, and am counting down until he turns 3.
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
Happy Birthday to your daughter
I LOVE vanilla cake but I also enjoy chocolate cake and apple pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie, lemon meringue pie :confused2:
The list could go on and on
Stacy Says:
Happy Birthday to the cutie!
What kind of cake? ANY KIND OF CAKE! I actually loved my mother-in-law’s birthday cakes. She did some kind of thick English icing that I have never tasted since (and unfortunately never will again since she passed away a few years ago)
Emma Sinclair Says:
Happy Birthday to your little girl! Cute picture!
Did someone say cake? I like yellow cake. With either chocolate frosting from a can, or impressively decorated - I love decorating cakes! There was a bakery down the street from where I grew up that made the BEST super sugary icing. Mmmm-mmmm, it was a special birthday treat every year.
As for pie, I like apple and pumpkin, but that’s just about it. Unless it’s pared with ice cream and then I’ll eat anything!
Chocoholic Says:
Happy Birthday! Definately chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate on my cake!!! Thats my favorite.
Missie Says:
Happy Birthday to Michelle’s Baby Girl! What a cutie patootie! Certainly this is not the same child who likes to run around naked or wakes you up at 5am shouting, “Dinner! Eat!”, is it? Because she is just too precious for words.
LUH-HUH-HUHVVVVE chocolate cake or actually chocolate anything.
I do love pies, but if I have to choose betwixt the 2, cake gets my vote every time. Would like for you to post the Death By Chocolate recipe and your pie that you won the award with (was it pear?) Or if you tell us, will you have to kill us? Never mind.
April Alsup Says:
Oh yes, she is a cutie!! Happy Birthday!
Cake? I like nearly any kind of cake. Unless we’re talking about some strange types of fruit cake. Other than for that, anything with sugar is alwasy a go!
Gina Says:
I like both actually. Choco;ate is my favorite cake by far though.
Crystal* Says:
Happy Birthday to your daughter! WOO!:streamer:
I personally love buttered pecan cake. Man, nothing better.
My sister always went for off the wall stuff that Mom would make and she would never eat. Finally she stuck with Strawberry Jello Pie. Go figure. LOL

Melissa Says:
What a sweetie! She looks absolutely adorable!
Hmm…favorite kind of pie is chocolate cream pie. Fruit pie is probably cherry or apple. And any type of chocolate cake! Sadly, I can’t have too much of any of this stuff anymore, but I do allow myself the occasional treat.
Alyssa Says:
Your daughter is so adorable!
I’m one of those rare breeds who doesn’t like chocolate cake. I do like carrot cake (my personal fave), white cake, and so on. Pie is good too, with banana cream and cherry being my favorites.
Tori Lennox Says:
She’s getting so big!
My favorite cake? Hmm. I like German chocolate, coconut, Red Velvet. As for pies, I like coconut (I guess I just like coconut, period :rotfl:), pecan, pumpkin, apple, peach.
Amy K. Says:
Thanks for the craving!
I’m not supposed to have cake but that doesn’t always stop me. I’m a simple girl. I love white cake with whipped cream frosting. I also love ice cream cakes from Coldstone Creamery. I can eat chocolate cake when it’s the only choice though.
Rene Says:
Oh, what a cute little birthday girl!!
Umm… I’m a pie gal myself. Love pumpkin, peach, blackberry, cherry, chocolate cream. I like cake too. My favorite flavor of cake is tres leche which isn’t easy to find and I haven’t tried to make it yet.
Michelle Says:
Kacey–I’ll take peach pie with vanilla ice cream any day. Especially Georgia peaches. Wow.
Michelle S.–My brother-in-law adores carrot cake. I can take it or leave it, but I do like the cream cheese frosting.
Kelly–ooh, rhubarb pie is wonderful. I like strawberry rhubarb, myself.
Peggy–I’ve never had butter pecan cake, but it sounds wonderful! Yummm…
Thanks Bonnie, and Stacy! I think I’ll keep her. She seemed to enjoy her day. The balloons were a big hit.
Emma—I’ve always wanted to try cake decorating. I’d love to learn how to make those roses.
Chocoholic–um, do you, by any chance like chocolate?
Missie–I could probably post the pear pie recipe. The Death By Chocolate one is in a cookbook I have by Maurice (French last name, canNOT remember it! Sorry!).
Chrys–strawberry Jello cake? Huh. Never heard of that one. Sounds interesting! I’d still love to hear about the butter pecan one. Mmm…
Hi Gina and April!
Melissa—ooh, chocolate cream pie. Now that I could go for.
Alyssa–I haven’t had a banana cream pie in years. Mmm…
Tori–I have a great recipe for a coconut macaroon pie you might love.:dancingfool:
Amy K–can you do a flourless cake?
Rene–I’ve never had tres leche. Sounds interesting!
