Weddings and Funerals
Have you noticed how family and friends, start to drift apart as the years go by? The last time I saw my aunts and uncles was at a wedding. Same with college friends. The other great occasion for reunions is funerals. We all get together, remark that it’s a shame we don’t get together more often, and then years go by until the next wedding or funeral.
I often wish I had a house on the Outer Banks–Reunion House, I’d call it. It would be a house where family could just come, spur of the moment, and visit. The days would be spent playing in the pool, on the beach, or sitting and watching the ocean. At night, we’d cook out on the grill, and talk while the sun goes down. Mmmm…nice.
My husband’s family does that every so often–we rent a beach house and all 26 of us will show up. Each family takes a night of the week to do the evening meal. That way you have 6 nights of someone else cooking, and one night of your own. Paper plates abound.
I love that.
My aunt and uncle came into town last night with their granddaughter. My daughter promptly ensconced herself in their laps, flirting, hugging, and taking all the attention away from her brother. Typical.
Dinner was nice, and thank you all for your dessert recommendations. I ended up making two cheesecakes–one regular and one with Splenda. The Splenda one came out pretty well, actually! Here was the recipe:
2 pkgs. cream cheese
1/2 c. sour cream
2 eggs
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. lemon rind
7 packets of Splenda
Why 7? That’s all I had left in the cupboard.
But it actually came out pretty well. I topped it off with fresh strawberries.
Today will be an–er…interesting day! We have WWII Boot Camp during gym class. A long day for me, but the kids should have fun. TGIF!

Yay! Glad the dessert went well. The cheesecake sounds awesome - I’ll have to give it a shot.
WWII boot came, huh? See, that’s history made fun. As opposed to sitting in a room and reading about it. Yay for you for being creative!
Definitely TGIF.

I wish I was closer to my relatives…well some of them anyway…others I’d like to drop down a well and forget about, but I really don’t have much in common with any of them. When we get together there’s little to say. I don’t think they know what to do with me. I didn’t get married or have kids, I write, I’m probably too sarcastic for my own good. They usually end up looking at me like I have to heads. But I’m close to my immediate family, so that’s the important thing to me.
Stacy Says:
It’s so true. We used to be so close to our cousins almost like the five of us were brothers and sisters. Now the only time we talk is when the families get together for special holidays…maybe twice a year if we both go at the same time. It’s sad:sad:
Rene Says:
I’ve always lived pretty far from my relatives, so I haven’t missed them all that much. I know my mom does, she has a million cousins and at one time they all lived in the same town. They are having a big reunion in Utah this summer and she wants me to go. I’d rather eat glass. Dh’s family is just too weird and there aren’t many of them, so there aren’t any big get-togethers with them.
Cheesecake sounds terrific. Hubby buys Splenda in bulk at Costco, although I did make something with Nutrasweet once and had to use little packets. I like using Splenda in lemonade.
Peggy Says:
I wish I had a better relation with my family. Apparently my sister just had a baby. And I wasn’t informed.

The Reunion House is an awesome idea. I agree. Families tend to drift apart over the years. I’m not paricularly close with any of mine. And I want that to be different with MY kids.

My family is pretty close-knit. They get together for a lot of things. Unfortunately, I”m on the other end of the state so I rarely get to be involved in any of the activities.

Have a great weekend, Michelle

I love the OBX Reunion House. We had the whole family in a rented house 2 years ago for Easter. You could hear our group for blocks playing “PIT”. What a great time!!
How are the ducks - they have taken over our front yard. The dog can’t go out that way - we are about a week into it. From what I’m reading, they have a 28 day gestation. Good luck with yours!!

Thanks for the recipe! Will definitely try it!

I’ve really enjoyed reading your Blog. Good luck with the book.
Thanks for the cheesecake recipe, I love Splenda and I love cheesecake.
Sounds like you enjoy your family, that’s great. Some of us are glad we live far away from our families. lol It’s sad though.
