Christmas Parties
Last night my husband and I went to a combined wedding shower/wine tasting.
What fun! We brought two bottles of Riesling wine from the same vineyard, same year–but one was a Kabinett Riesling and the other was an Auslese. I always get so confused as to which is which. The Auslese was way too sweet for me, but the Kabinett was good. We also tried French wines, Australian wines, and South African wines. Mmmm…
Usually I’m a white wine person but I actually found a few reds that I liked (BV Coastal Estates Pinot Noir and their Merlot was good, too). In the past, a Cabernet Sauvignon was enough to send me staggering for water (too heavy). But I tasted one that wasn’t bad. They served cheeses, French bread, and all sorts of appetizers with the wines. I tried Drunken Goat cheese. Now, I have no idea how it got the name. Did they get a goat sloshed and then milk him? It was strong, but a great combination with the Cabernet.
We played a game where we had to identify famous couples (answers in the comment section). See how you do:
1. The Kennedys
2. The Von Trapps
3. The Hanovers
4. The Jeffersons
5. The Jetsons
6. The Fitzgeralds
My hubby and I kicked bootie and won a gift certificate. There were 19 in all, and we recognized all but one (I listed it as number 3). Can you name them?

Michelle Says:
1. John and Jackie Kennedy
2. Maria and Captain (Georg)
3. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip
4. George and Weazy
5. George and Jane
6. F. Scott and Zelda
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
I got all but the third
I should be ashamed because Canada is a commonwealth country and they are our royals after all . . . lol. Even so, a bit of penance is required
Sounds like you had a great time, Michelle
Michelle Styles Says:
Umm. But Queen Elizabeth ll and Prince Philip are not Hanoverian. They are Winsors.
Prince Charles signs as Winsor-Mountbatten.
You could have George lll and Charlotte or George ll and Caroline.
MaryF Says:
I like Kabinett Riesling, too. My current favorite is Shiraz, though.
Michelle Says:
Michelle S.–Maybe the answer key was wrong? I was surprised to hear Hanover also. I didn’t think they were. Wonder where the book came up with that?
MaryF–Oooh, I like a good Shiraz, too. Any particular brand that you enjoy?
Rene Says:
Yeah, I would agree that the royals are Windsors. But I believe that was name taken for political purposes. Not sure.
Anyway, I love wine tasting parties. I love cabs and merlots. I really like blended reds like meritages. I love chiantis and shiraz’s. I like the columbia crest shiraz. My favorite wine however, is the Kenwood sauvingnon blanc. I like Rieslings as long as they are dry. I drank a Coppola Claret last night that is a big fav of mine. I am partial to California wines of course, but I think Australia and South America has some great wines as well.
Mary Says:
Sounds like fun. I love the couples’ game.
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
That explains why I didn’t clue in and guess the Hanovers. I thought they went by Windsor.
Michelle, as to why the book came up with Hanover even though they are Windsors . . . perhaps it’s because Elizabeth II comes from the English branch of the House of Hanover. As Michelle S pointed out, they haven’t used that name in a long time. Rene got me curious so I looked up when and why they changed the name.
In 1917 The House of Windsor was established by George V. Basically it was that all descendants in the male line of Queen Victoria would bear the name of Windsor. The main reason was that it was a “good English name.”
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
I read up a bit more and just to be more accurate . . . the House of Hanover saw six monarchs: George I, George II, George III, George IV, William IV, and Victoria. Then they were succeeded by the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed the house of Windsor in 1917. Thanks for the great post, Michelle
I had fun looking this up
Michelle Says:
You beat me to it! I was just looking it up here: http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page135.asp and found out exactly what you posted.
I found it interesting that it was a royal proclamation to change the name. :headspin:
Kelly Says:
Aren’t the Hanovers the Royal Family?
