Special Grandparents
My Dot Moms column is up today. I’ve dedicated this one to grandparents everywhere. I think you’ll see what I mean.
Today, the heavens opened, the angels sang, and there was great rejoicing throughout the land. Yes, my daughter used the toilet.
No one ever told me that there would come a time when the bodily functions of my children would become more important than world peace or curing cancer. You fall into this trap of thinking that–oooh! This might be the start to a diaper-free existence! And of course, it’s all a big tease. They decide to train themselves when it’s time. You can’t force it. In fact, the more you force it, the more they rebel and stay in diapers longer. So, yes, I know this was a fluke. But I’m going to have a big grin on my face ALL DAY.
‘Cause maybe, just maybe, she’ll do it again.
I’m up to page 222 on my revisions. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Woo hoo!

Margery Says:
Nice column, Michelle. I plead guilty:whistle:
Mary Says:
I’m glad you’re making progress. Enjoy the process of revision. I always learn a lot with revision.
Tori Says:
Woohoo!!! Congrats to the kidlet!!!
Rene Says:
When my daughter was 18 mos. old she started using the potty. I was so happy. Now, at 2 1/2, she won’t use it. Or rather, she gets on the toilet, sits there for awhile, gets off then pees in her diaper. If I’m not paying attention, she will go on her own, but if I put her on the toilet, she “freezes” up. I really hate potty training.
Bonnie Ferguson Says:
Woo Hoo on the revisions and woo hoo for your daughter :headspin:
Robyn Says:
YAY!
Just don’t believe the ’signs of readiness’ crap the parenting books feed you. My son had all the signs- and we lived in potty hell for 5 months. When I said, “Fine! Wear your diaper to Kindergarten! I’m through!” he trained himself in four days.
Melissa Says:
My daughter started potty-training herself, then subsequently stopped.
Not sure why, but I do know that I got very tired of buying those darn training pants (which are more expensive than the diapers!).
Melissa Mc Says:
My youngest now sleeps in panties! No more pull-ups for us. And she’s only 2 1/2. I just let her do it herself. She saw her siblings using the potty and sleeping in underwear and didn’t want to be left out. Thank goodness.
Good job on the revisions! I’m slipping into panic mode myself.
Leanna Ellis Says:
I always comforted myself with the fact that kids don’t usually go to college wearing diapers. I thought my son would never get it. I forced to early. Then didn’t want to face it with my daughter and she decided on her own. That’s the way to go!
Loved the Dot Mom article.
kacey Says:
I’m so glad I’m past (way past) that stage of my life!
Good luck on those revisions.
Stacy Says:
Good for your daughter and You. I’m currently starting with my second and I truly believe we blank out the agonizing hours spent with the first one or we’d never potty-train another child again! LOL.:help:
Amy K. Says:
She WILL do it again…eventually! Congrats to her for doing it once.
Missie Says:
Yay for the potty girl!
I tried forcing my son early, and hell would have been too kind a word for what we went through.
I even put a filled jar of candy corn on a shelf above the toilet and told him that every time he went, he would get “Potty Candy”. I know, it’s pathetic. To this day (and he’s nine) when he sees candy corn in the store, he says, “Look, Mom, Potty Candy!” That’s embarrassing!
He would go #1, but when it came time for the Big Stuff, he would push me out of his room and go in his pull-up, then holler, “Momma, I done!”
And now we have a three month old daughter…Please, Lord, let her training be easier!
Danica Says:
ROFL@ Missie! Pipe dreams, I tell you.
Although my friend claims she’s got her one year old trained, the rotten stinky woman.
