Dot Moms

My Dot Moms column is up today if anyone wants to go leave a comment and say hi.

In other news, I decided to try and resurrect two rose bushes I have. Boneheaded me decided to put them in an area that didn’t get enough sunlight, and as expected, I’ve gotten approximately five blooms in the past five years. Today I decided to move them to a new flower bed we built this year. Full sun! :hello2: Lots of water! And I even put some fish emulsion on them, which in theory, they like.

It’ll be interesting to see if they survive the move. Some plants do great when you move them, like day lilies. Every time I divide lilies, they love me for it. Other plants, like an inkberry holly that we moved a few months ago, curled up and died. :fryingpan: Oh well. Win some, lose some.

Anyone have tips on growing good roses?

Water them. We tend to lose a lot of roses so we finally gave up.

    Good column!!!

Plant garlic bulbs around them - roses like garlic. I did that - my roses look good but I can’t find the garlic….:hissyfit:

Lots of good sun. Also, if you can plant them on a slight incline, then they get good drainage and don’t drown. Even in our Texas heat, I only water once a week.

I’m a bonehead when it come to gardening. However I did shove some kind of plant into a pot yesterday. I hope it does okay.

I absolutely LOVE roses but have a very hard time keeping them. My sister’s neighbor must have about 12 in his front yard and they are gorgeous. Maybe next summer I’ll try again. Good luck!:goodvibes:

My grandma who could grow ANYTHING always said roses love lots of water but they dont like keeping their feet wet. Which means they like water but not homesteading in it.

Me? I kill anything with a leaf, petal or root.

Despite my black thumb, my roses do pretty well. They’re in the sunniest part of the yard, in front of the house, and I think they get water. We have a sprinkler on a timer so that I don’t forget. If only I could get the rest of my plants on a water timer, that would be sweet.

Now to find something that automatically weeds for me…

Roses are SO tough - they do really well for a couple of years and then all of a sudden, they don’t feel like growing anymore. We had a lot of luck, though, the past few years, with the climbing roses we planted. I thought for sure this winter did them in…full sun, lot of water and my husband gives them some kind of rose food at the start of the season.

Why are you planting roses when you should be revising, btw?
