Silly TV Shows

I’m still plugging away at the books, waiting for that “Aha” moment to strike and I’ll know that THIS proposal is THE ONE….got about 2 more pages written on I Dream of Johnny. Contemporaries are such a strange fit for me. I feel out of place in an unfamiliar genre. But we’ll see where this goes.

I was thinking last night about old television shows that are off the air. In the 80’s, I watched two shows religiously. I lived in the UK at that time, and each week I would flip on Robin of Sherwood. Robin of SherwoodIt was a mystical show about Robin Hood, complete with sword fighting, magic, and hunky Michael Praed. Okay, so the man had a mullet. I thought he was hot at the time. Hey, I was eleven.

DynastyI also watched Dynasty. Oh, the glamor and glitz of that era. I loved hating Alexis Carrington and I thought the character Amanda was the most beautiful actress I’d ever seen.

How about you? What goofy shows did you watch in the 80’s?

I remember watching Dallas, Falcon Crest and Knots Landing. Nothing like a good cheesy weekly primetime soap. The 80’s was also when I picked up my love of dayime soaps too. Still keep up with a couple to this day.

  2. Peggy Says:

Cheers, Dynasty and Knots Landing and this other show I don’t remember the title, but it had a Down Syndrome boy in it. The main character was a “nerd” girl in school and she had an older sister that lived above the garage. The sister’s name was Paige. I remember this because there was also a Paige on Knots Landing my hubby was “fond” of and wanted to name my dd#2 after. I prefer to think of the sweet sister living above the garage when recalling how my dd was named. :-)

I loved Robin of Sherwood! I’m a sucker for the Robin Hood legend, anyway. The first book I ever thought about writing was kinda sorta based on it. Never did write that whole book, because I was pitiful as a writer at the time, only I just didn’t realize it, but I still remember the characters as if they were real people I’d met.

  4. Michelle Says:

Peggy, wasn’t that “Life Goes On?” I think it was. Anyway, I remember the mom in that show was a professional singer. She did the voice of Eponine in “Les Miserables” on Broadway. :)

Debbie–at some point I’m going to have to rent the DVDs and watch the whole season over again. Man, did I ever drool over Michael Praed.

  5. Mary Says:

I watched Dallas and Cheers. I was also busy being an 80s kind of woman!

  6. Rene Says:

Michelle, you are thinking of Patti LuPone and she did not sing Eponine but Fauntine. She also did Evita and Sunset Boulevard.

I didn’t really watch t.v. in the ’80’s. The first half I was in high school and I was either on the phone or read TRN’s (trashy romance novels). The second half I was in college and either studying or partying my brains out. I started watching t.v. again in the late ’80’s when I got hooked on Roseanne and thirtysomething.

  7. Michelle Says:

Rene, you’re right. I was thinking Fauntine and typed Eponine. :dancingfool:

  8. Melissa Marsh Says:

Oooh, I *adored* Robin of Sherwood! It was on our PBS station and I watched it religiously. Even kept watching when Jason Connery (Sean’s son) replaced Michael Praed. I’d love to be able to get my hands on some of those DVD’s and take a trip down memory lane.
My parents watched Dallas and I got hooked on Falcon Crest with my grandma. We also watched “Dukes of Hazzard” EVERY Friday night.

  9. Tori Says:

Oooo, I loved Dynasty, Scarecrow & Mrs. King, Magnum PI (loved Tom Selleck in that Ferrari!), I also spent a lot of time glued to MTV (back in the dark ages when they actually showed music videos!), but my absolute favorite show was Hart to Hart. :)

  10. Christine Keach Says:

Melissa, my grandmother got me hooked on Falcon Crest, too!

My all-time favorite show was The A-Team. Don’t laugh. It’s not that funny. That show inspired me to be the writer I am today. In my little girl mind, I wrote fan fiction for that show before “fan fiction” was a term. In fact, that was the first story I wrote over 100 pages and it was my first voyage into stories with suspense and danger. (I was 11 or 12) Granted no one EVER died in that show, but I learned to kill off quite a few characters later on!

  11. Michelle Says:

Oh, Hart to Hart! And the A-Team, yes! I watched both of those. Later on, I watched Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton in Beauty and the Beast. I wrote fan fiction for that in a yellow 3-ring binder. Man, those were the days! :headbang:

  12. Crystal* Says:

I wasn’t much on the nighttime soaps. But I loved Moonlighting, A-Team, Magnum, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Remington Steele. Oh man. I could go on and on and on…
I LOVE this smiley. heh :dancingfool:
    Grins*

  13. Melissa Mc Says:

I watched Dynasty. We used to dress-up as characters for the end of the season finale each year.

  14. StDebb Says:

Hart to Hart just made me crazy. All Jennifer Hart ever seemed to do was stand off to the side when there was trouble and shout, “Oh, Jonathan!” The feminist in me hated that.

    Debbie

  15. Peggy Says:

Yep, “Life Goes On”, that was it, though I don’t remember any singing mom!

I remember Beauty and the Beast, and Remington Steele. Loved that show.

  16. Danica Says:

Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers The Greatest American Hero? Ohhh, it was my favorite. I would have to beg to stay up and watch it, and sometimes, I’d have to sneak out of bed. I didn’t care though, that show was so awesome, I’d gladly get spanked for watching it.

  17. Michelle Says:

Danica–geez, thank you for that song in my head. Believe it or not, I’m walkin’ on air. I never thought I could feel so free…Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Who could it be? Believe it or not, it’s just me….

  18. Christine Keach Says:

Oh, I’d forgotten about Airwolf and The Greatest American Hero! My mom and I got lost on a five hour drive to a friend’s house because we missed an exit when we both sang that “Believe it or Not” at the top of our lungs!

I also loved Hardcastle & McCormick.

  19. Tori Says:

How did I forget Remington Steele??? I loved that show, too! And the A-Team!

  20. Danica Says:

Christine, I remember having the same thing happen on the way to the beach! We missed our exit because we were singing so loud!

And ah yes, who could forget Airwolf? Or, the wonderful BT, er, I mean hero of Michael Knight, in Knight Rider. Sigh…
