Sappy Boo Hoo Movies

I am a self-professed sap. I cry during movies. Last night my dh brought “The Notebook” for me to watch. He handed me a bath towel beforehand for crying and inquired whether I might need a beach towel instead. The man knows me well. :goodvibes:

Whenever I watch a love story of any kind, I like to connect with the characters (Okay, with the exception of “Pearl Harbor” which had the worst love story known to mankind–big raspberries. :ick:). I want to be sucked into their world and experience the kind of world-altering love, the happiness that they go through. And yes, I like to cry sometimes, too.

If you haven’t seen “The Notebook” and you enjoy a good love story–RUN, don’t walk to your nearest video story. You will love it.

But aside from “The Notebook” here are some of my all-time tear fest movies, ranked in no particular order:

1. Finding Neverland (I bawled like a baby and it was really good).
2. Shadowlands
3. Beaches
4. Steel Magnolias
5. Terms of Endearment
6. Dragonfly

My husband, though he’s kind enough to endure movies like this with me (in my defense, I have also watched horrible movies like “Bloodsport” with him)…doesn’t cry during movies. He laughs at me and hands me the tissues (or in last night’s case, the towel). What about you? Are you a movie-sobber like me? Or do you squint at the movie and hem and haw like my husband? Which movies made you cry the most?

  1. Mary Says:

    I loved the Notebook, too.

  2. Katie Says:

Camelot. And A Star is Born. Sniffle.

:starwars: Yes, my son is picking smilies again….

  3. Leanna Ellis Says:

What’s Dragonfly? Haven’t heard of that one. But all the others you mentioned, I’ve cried through. :) Also, I’d add Braveheart. I cried throught the whole end of that movie and all the way out to the car (my then fiance and now hubby was getting a little worried about me, but hey! they’d killed Mel!). I cannot watch that movie a second time.

  4. Michelle Says:

Leanna–Dragonfly had Kevin Costner in it. He’d lost his wife and daughter in an accident and no longer believed in an afterlife. Bitter, tormented hero, cool suspense movie, and a wrencher of an ending. Check it out!

  5. Caro Says:

Easy answer — Now, Voyager with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid. I also tear up at the end of Casablanca.

Now, Voyager gets me because Davis’ character has gone from so repressed to making the choice to live a rather unconventional lifestyle according to the times, opening her home to the daughter of her lover (and if those cigarettes ain’t a metaphor for what they couldn’t show on screen, I don’t know what is). When she says, “Jerry, we have the moon; let’s not ask for the stars,” she’s so confident and sure of her choice that I get all sniffly.

As for Casablanca, how can one resist Rick sending Ilsa off with Laszlo because there’s a greater call they both have to answer than their own happiness. “Here’s looking at you, kid,” gets me every time.

Btw, did you know that Warner Bros. actually considered a sequel to Casablana? Called Brazzaville, the treatment was done by Frederick Stephani (who wrote and directed the original Flash Gordon serial) and a copy can be found here. I’m very glad Hal Wallis rejected it.

  6. Peggy Says:

Death scenes - and I don’t mean killing the villian. Particularly children.

The worse movie I cried through so bad I had to shut if off several times, was Passion of the Christ. Great movie, but I could never watch it again. Far too draining.

I’m not a ‘chick movie’ viewer. I’d rather see a thriller, horror, sci-fi, action adventure, than a rom-com or some 10 hankie weeper. My friend, a guy, has been insisting I see The Notebook, going so far as to lend me his copy. I still haven’t seen it… And yet, when I do get around to seeing these movies– Out of Afica, Terms of Endearment, Beaches, Titanic, Steel Magnolias, they become absolute favourites.

  8. Christine Keach Says:

I don’t cry a lot at movies, but I love both the “sappy” love stories and the action packed stories. I cried during the Notebook, but I also cried during Rocky 3 & 4.

I have to tell you about this romance I watched and LOVED!!!! If I can find it on video, I will. I cried like a baby! I don’t remember the whole title, but it had something to do with “Ordinary Days”. It was a Hallmark movie earlier this year. It had Keri Russell and Skeet Ulrich. Now, I usually prefer suspense stories, but this story had no suspense. It was just a beautiful romance and I can’t say enough about it!

  9. Rene Says:

I don’t care for sappy movies myself. I much prefer mindless, violent fare like “The Transporter.”

The movie “Blue” with Juliette Binoche always sends me for kleenex. And the scene in the “The Champ” when Jon Voight sends little Ricky Schreoder away. I bawled my head off.

  10. Teresa Says:

I cry at the movies. Even when I tell myself, I’m not going to. . . I still do. And my husband always says, It’s ok it’s not real. He’s such a big help.:fryingpan:

  11. Amy K. Says:

I tear up and try to hide it. :confused2: Beaches and Steel Magnolias are both on my list…I’d have to think a while to come up with others since I don’t watch a lot of movies anymore.

  12. Suzanne Says:

    Rob Roy!!!!

  13. Kelly Says:

I nearly got myself lynched at the theatre when I went to see The Notebook. I found it pretty sappy but not so much I couldn’t still enjoy it. I really loved the idea of the man telling his wife their story like that. But the ending was just too much. So when it ended, the theatre was completely silent except for all the women (there were only 2 men in the theatre that night) sobbing and bawling their eyes out which for some reason just sounded really funny and I broke out into hysterical laughter, so much so I started snorting. Oh yeah…my friends tried to smother me with their jackets. It wasn’t pretty.

  14. MaryF Says:

Dude, I cried during Guess Who, the Ashton Kutcher/Bernie Mac movie. I am a SAP. Steel Magnolias gets me every time. I’ve stopped watching movies that make me cry, but I cried for HOURS after reading Harry Potter 6.

  15. Michelle Says:

Caro–no, I never knew they had thought of doing a sequel. I’m glad they didn’t.

Peggy–Passion is still sitting on my shelf waiting to be watched. I have to be in the right frame of mind.

Christine–I must have missed that one. Hallmark often does some good movies. :)

MaryF–I couldn’t believe the ending to HP 6. I had a feeling it would happen at some point, but not then.

  16. Gina Says:

The Notebook is such a good movie. I cry during movies. Sigh I even cry during television shows if I’m so moved. The last episode of Queer as Folk I cried the whole hour. Cried during Beaches too. Titanic and Ghost did me in.

  17. Gina Says:

OH forgot to mention! I received my Giftcard yesterday. Thanks for sending that out so quickly!

  18. Olga Says:

Casablanca and Steel Magnolias are on my list. I know several movies where I didn’t cry, but felt very sad, like when a hero has to go to the sea, and his girl stays on the shore, and they know they will never, never be together. The actors are also amazing and really, really handsome there!

  19. Leanna Ellis Says:

Michelle, I’ll have to check out Dragonfly. I usually like Costner. Love Dances with Wolves. And it makes me cry too.

Suzanne! I love Rob Roy. Great villain, great acting.

  20. Melissa McClone Says:

I cry over a lot of things, including those Hallmark commercials. I have never seen The Notebook, but I recently watched Finding Neverland. I had no idea it was a cryfest. Oh, man. I was in for it big time. Loved the movie, but I hadn’t cried like that in a long time.

  21. Michelle Says:

Gina–great! Glad you received it okay.

Melissa McClone–what got me about Finding Neverland was the whole–mother not being able to watch her kids grow up. Ohhh!! That got to me.

Rob Roy was good, too, but I didn’t cry when I watched it. :)

  22. kacey Says:

Oh, Dragonfly was such a good movie! It as just on TV awhile ago, and I watched it again!

I’m a baby when it comes to sad movies. I don’t particularly like to watch them though. Why pay to cry???

  23. Angie Smith Says:

Titanic is on my list with Notebook. A recent movie that was a tear jerker to me was Ladder 49.

  24. Melissa Marsh Says:

I know I’m completely weird, but “The Iron Giant” ALWAYS, ALWAYS makes me cry. I start to bawl like a baby! And I’ve seen it how many times (because you know how kids are - they will watch the same movie over and over again).
“Beauty and the Beast” does it, as well. And “Pearl Harbor.”
I’ve noticed that I’ve grown into a weepy movie person. Even touching scenes in a wild comedy will make me tear up. But I do love action flicks, too. Usually don’t cry at those. ;)

  25. Michelle Says:

Angie–I haven’t seen Ladder 49. Will have to try that one.

Melissa–Awww on Beauty and the Beast. True, true. :)
