Summertime foods

I was at the grocery store yesterday buying a watermelon when it occurred to me that soon all of my favorite summertime foods will be gone. :hissyfit:

I started thinking…what are my favorite foods that I specifically associate with summertime? Here’s my list:

1. Cold watermelon
2. Hot buttered corn on the cob (I used to go into my Grandma’s back yard to pick it off the cornstalk)
3. ice cream cones and popsicles
4. grilled babyback ribs

There are certain recipes I don’t cook during the summer because I associate them with winter. Some family favorites are:

1. Beef stew
2. Baked potato soup sprinkled with bacon, scallions, and cheddar cheese
3. Chili
(notice they all involve hot soups?) :coffee2:

How about you? Are there any foods you crave during a particular season? Or are there foods you won’t cook at other times of the year?

I love cantaloupe. I have a rule–from June through August I don’t turn on my oven–it’s either barbeque or sandwiches.

    man, I want Mary’s rule…

Though we mostly eat lighter meals in the summer, I do still make pot roasts, soups, chili etc. in the summer. Just not as much or as often.

chocolate is good all year round though!!

  3. Leanna Ellis Says:

Blueberries! I love fresh picked blueberries and can’t wait till July arrives every year so I can eat them by the handful.

  4. Rene Says:

Being in southern California, my summer lasts pretty much through October when it comes to the grocery store.

I make chili, chicken pot pie, butternut squash soup and pot roast during the winter. The summer dishes I still make in the winter.

Pretty much all fruit I associate with summer. They don’t come into season here until then, otherwise they are imported and don’t taste as good. Corn on the cob, for sure. Sandwiches in kaiser buns. Why? I think because it reminds me of picnics.

Winter, pretty much the same as you listed. All the foods that require hours of cooking. Turkey, can only have at Christmas or Thanksgiving.

  6. Amy K. Says:

Stew, soup and chili are on my winter list. And I’m really going to miss all the fresh summer fruits!

  7. Sharon Says:

We barbeque all year round. We’re barbeque freaks :hungry:

Winter meals here are chicken and dumplings, sausage and potato casserole, gumbo and crawfish etouffee.

  8. MaryF Says:

I won’t make apple pie during summer - that’s a fall food. Nothing like apple pie and season premier week!

  9. Michelle Says:

    Mary–I want that rule! :)

Leanna–I adore fresh blueberry cobbler. Especially Maine blueberries, so large and fat. Mmm…

Rene–I’d love to make a homemade chicken pot pie. I’ve never tried it. Got a good recipe?

Sharon–I have to buy a new grill. I use it all year round, about 3-4 times a week.

MaryF–OMG, you have me drooling on the keyboard. Apple pie–yummy!

  10. Christine Keach Says:

Sadly (for my waistlne), I’ll eat any foods any time of the year!

  11. Gina Says:

I love lemonade, but nothing like a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer’s day. My favorite is the one they sell at those hot dog places at the mall and at fairs. Hot dog on a stick lemonade is the best.

  12. Steph T. Says:

We bbq all year round too. But I’m so going to miss watermelon and sweet corn.:hissyfit:

(was anyone else really hungry after reading this post, or was it just me?:hungry:)

  13. Melissa Marsh Says:

I love sweetcorn in the summer and lots of ice cream. But for the winter, give me chili with a warm cinnamon roll!

  14. Michelle Says:

    Gina–ohh, lemonade! Love that.

Melissa–I adore hot cinnamon rolls. Yum!! :hungry:

  15. Suzanne Says:

Wow, I like Mary’s rule, too!!!!

And I will eat chili all year…
