Starting Fresh

I’m still running both contests through midnight tonight! I’ll choose a winner and announce that person on Monday. You can enter the Animal Caption contest or the really easy newsletter sweepstakes by just entering your e-mail address in the newsletter subscription area on the sidebar.

My weekend has been a mixture of revising and polishing my book and trying to come up with ideas for the new medieval. It’s an interesting stage at the beginning. There are so many possibilities, I have to eliminate the cliches and try to find something different. But when you do find that perfect idea, the one that has you just dying to write, that’s the one. Maybe it’s like dating. You have to sort through a lot of frogs to find the prince.

My husband has been building a shed in our backyard. The man still amazes me with his building prowess. I, of course, hated Geometry with a passion and thought it was useless. But last night we were measuring diagonals and trying to determine if the foundation was square (So that’s what they were talking about in math class!). It was off by a quarter inch. Now, to me, that’s close enough! Not for my hubby. He wanted it perfect, and eventually he got it that way. This is also the same man who, when mixing brownie batter, will hold the measuring cup up to the light to check the meniscus (sp?) and determine if it is precisely 1/4 a cup of cooking oil. :book: (He doesn’t normally do the cooking.)

Anyway, if it were up to me building the shed, it would likely tilt on its foundation and come crashing down. But that’s okay–I’m perfectly happy holding the tape measure and letting him make the construction decisions.

So what about you? Do you enjoy initiating home improvement projects, or are you the sort to hold the tape measure? What’s the most complicated thing you’ve done in or around your house?

I like to be the idea person and then step into a supervisory role. We, well, my husband has put up a wooden swing set with slide and fort, built a playhouse. My husband put down Pergo flooring throughout most of the downstairs. I took the kids and went to my mother’s for a week during that. LOL! It works for us.

  2. Katie Says:

Changing the belt on the vacuum cleaner is about as techie as I get. And often that baffles me.:banghead:

But I never use measuring cups when cook. :hungry:

  3. Mary Says:

I love to “try” and do technical things. Notice the operative word is “try”. I usually do that then call my husband.

  4. Caro Says:

I’m a drama major who did a lot of set building during her day — including stairs for a production of The Man Who Came to Dinner that stood up quite nicely to the traffic — and I still love to go after something with a hammer and nails. That’s probably a good thing because I’m the technical-minded one around our house; last night, I was mucking with the sticky lock on the front door while my husband did the dishes!

Michelle - I LOVE this new look!! It’s perfect - and I love the way the castle is incorporated in your header!! Congrats!!! I just spent some time poking around and am going back to check out more…

oh - I enjoy initiating home improvement projects - and when I say initiating, I mean I mention it and then I’d like someone else to do it *ggg*

  6. Jill Says:

    Hey love the new look!

  7. Melissa McClone Says:

I make the list of what needs to be done. If it involves power tools, hubby takes over. If it involves paint or fabric, I do it.

  8. Alyssa Says:

What home improvement projects? (This might explain why my lawn is dead and my bathroom sink is clogged . . .)

  9. Suzanne Says:

I like home decorating, like painting, and that’s about it!

  10. Michelle Says:

Leanna–oh, I like the idea of going out of town.

Katie–I’m getting more adventurous with “estimating” amounts when I cook.

Mary–I usually put things together (high chairs, exersaucers, whatever) and dh builds from scratch.

    Caro–now that’s a good division of labor!

Steph–I keep hinting for my built-in bookcases, but they aren’t there yet…thanks for the compliment on the site! I love it.

Melissa–I am decorating-challenged. No clue on that. I envy your abilities!

    Alyssa–LOL. Well, there’s always a plunger, I guess…

  11. Tori Says:

I’d just as soon wave a magic wand and have whatever project it may be done to perfection without any effort from me. Aside from the wand waving, that is. :rotfl:

  12. Peggy Says:

My hubby is not a handyman. I always tell him the next man I marry has to either be a carpenter or a mechanic!

I love giving home renovations a shot…though I never fully complete them or end up doing them semi-acceptable!

  13. kacey Says:

My dh is a super handy man, so I’ve turned all that over to him. I did it myself for a lot of years though. I can fix a leaky faucet with the best of ‘em!:hello2:

  14. LauraP Says:

Power tools can be fun. Must attempt to master leaky faucets next.

  15. Gina Says:

I’m the hold the tape measure type too, but when it comes to electronics? The men come running to me.

  16. Amy K. Says:

I’m all about hiring out. The only thing I do is paint, and then I take charge.:bounce:
