Website help, please!

I am treating myself to a new web design. Yahoo! :jumping: But in order to make it happen, I have to list the design features I like to help my designer know what I want. I’ve been looking through various author sites, and while there are certain features I like, most of them are plain AWFUL. I can’t believe how many bestselling authors don’t invest in a good website. It looks like Joe Schmoe threw something together in his garage.

I’m hoping to achieve a website with a gorgeous landscape photo surrounding the site. Okay, I don’t know if you guys like it, but I’m kind of partial to the castle on the main page. I may try to incorporate it into the rest of the site. In any case, I’m out on a limb here, begging for help. What are some of your favorite author web sites? What features do you like about them?

I’ve been going through the ones listed on the RWA main page, but I’m sure there are other sites I’m overlooking. Got any good ones to share? Thanks!! :rocker:

I’m in the process of having a new one designed too! I love my new design, so much so that I stare at the prototype Bekke sent me on a daily basis. It’s getting all the content together for it that’s killing me and holding up the show.:help:

As for content, I love it when authors have blogs and articles. (Stephanie Bond writes a new article a month)And I love the trivia behind the books too. Suzanne Brockmann has a lot of cool behind the book stuff (even though her website isn’t great.)And I like the affirmations that Suzanne has on her website. I look at them a lot.

:banana:I like a recent news section, articles, blogs, excerpts, all that kind of stuff :headspin: It’s great when it loads quickly and is easy to access too. I think the best ones look snazzy but still manage to keep it simple. And I love the picture of the castle that you have on yours :hello2:

Two sites for historical romance authors that I like are Kathryn Smith’s and Kimberley Logan’s. :jumping:

Bonnie–Kathryn does have a nice site. Thanks! :)

Steph–We have to have content?? ::thunk::  Rats.

A good website creator would warn you about using animation! I’ve received compliments on the design of my writing website, Writer’s Edge. It’s at http://www.writers-edge.info if you’d like to take a look. That’s the blog page.

    Good luck!

Michelle, I’d love to help, but I’m design-challenged. I can’t tell the difference between a professional and a Joe Schmoe website. All I know is what I like.

I love the castle! I can’t wait to see what your site looks like!!

Cool, a new website. Hm, well, it’s cool that some designers are now using Wordpress to design the whole site, so the author can do new pages and updates anytimes she wants them without waiting for a designer who might be backlogged.

I like nice menu bars that don’t say cute things on them that make you scratch your head and wonder where they lead. I like menu words like “about me” “blog” “articles” You know where you’re headed

I hate tiny print. I like a pretty, easy to read font on the header and menu bar. Can’t wait to see what you end up with!

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Well, I’m partial to mine  http://www.kristenpainter.com and my webmistress just put her newly designed site up, http://www.jaquiecrane.com – it’s pretty cool.
