What to get your child’s teacher for a gift
My book cleared customs and should be delivered to Mills & Boon today. Yay! Now the real waiting begins.
Yesterday my house became a walking spice cabinet. My children discovered the wonders of those little glass jars that have cool stuff inside them. If you shake some of them, they make rattling noises. I saw no harm in it, as it kept them out of my way while I was making dinner, but I later found Italian spices on the end table, onion flakes on the floor, and my daughter was busily shaking a jar of red hots while jamming to 80’s music.
I’m still finding spices in various and sundry places.
Last night I managed to get another 8 pages done, which brings me up to page 148. Today won’t be all that good because I’m working
and this is the last week of school. One of the things that is guaranteed to drive me over the edge is when I’m making those horrible phone calls to parents telling them, “I’m so sorry to tell you this, but Little Johnny did not pass history for the year. He’ll have to attend summer school.”
The common parental response? “Is there any extra credit he can do?”
Some day, I swear, I’m going to lose it and just go off like a cannon. I’m going to scream like a banshee, “NO! There’s not any extra credit! He hasn’t done the last seven homework assignments and you want to know if there’s any extra credit???? Gaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!” :confused2: ::Michelle breaks into hysterical laughter::
Also, this is an insider tip for all you parents who are lovely enough to get your child’s teacher a gift at the end of the year. First of all, we really do appreciate it. But food, chocolate, or gift certificates are the best of all gifts because they don’t require storage. Candles and knick knacks and teacher goodies are nice, but after a while, you just don’t have room for them. We’re pretty easy to please. If you want to wrap two homemade oatmeal cookies in some Saran Wrap and slap a bow on it, that’s just fine by us. There’s no need to spend a lot of money, really. But do know that teachers love little thank you gifts. Godiva is good, too.

Ugh on the summer school conferences, Michelle. Texas has a law that if 5th graders don’t pass the reading and math TAKS tests, they have to go to summer school and we have to have conferences with them and the principals. Well, I had my conferences for the kids who didn’t pass the reading tests at the beginning of May but didn’t have the math tests till after school was out because we didn’t get the results till the last Friday of school. I never did have more than a phone conference with one of the parents because I didn’t have the proper phone number.
And amen on the gift cert/edible ideas!

Being the good parent that I am :coffee2: , I always did gift certificates to the bookstore. I mean, if a teacher didn’t appreciate a gift certificate to the bookstore…she shouldn’t BE a teacher
but once the kids got out of grade school and started having like 8 teachers or more a year…well, that sure went by the wayside $$$$
Katie Says:
Hurray for summer beak! Hurray for time to write! Major Productivity here you come!
Michelle Says:
Kacey–that’s where cookies are a good idea. You can make one batch and wrap up little packages for each of the 8 teachers.
Mary–those conferences sure are a pain!
Kelly Says:
Good luck with the manuscript!
Ugh, I got my son’s teacher a candle holder. :loser: LOL! For Christmas an ornament to add to her other 500. My only defense is that this was my first school year?? I’ll work on it next year.
Rene Says:
For both of my kids’ classes, I donated $20 towards a gift. For the kindergarten teacher, we think we will have enough for a $300 American Express gift card. Not sure about the other teacher. They usually get her a gift certificate from Nordstroms.
Teachers deserve the best, IMHO, I don’t how they do it and do it so well.
Congrats on the book to M&B. Can’t wait to hear how it goes.
BTW, got 6 pages written yesterday…standing up at my kitchen counter.

I also do bookstore gift certificates.
And what is wrong with some parents? You have to stay on top of that stuff. Geez. I do NOT like hands-off parents. It irritates.
Best of luck, Michelle. And I can’t believe school is still in! :confused2:

You must be very excited about this being the last week of school! Me, however, not so much.
Tori Says:
:cheer::cheer::cheer: Hooray for your book hitting London!!!

Thanks for the gift tips. I’ve gotten GCs in the past but always wanted a teacher’s insight.
Here’s hoping the sub goes through immediately and you get a call very soon!:hello2:
Suzanne Says:
I always wanted candles! I’d burn them fast enough there was no storage problem! But candy and cookies are good too.
Michelle Says:
Rene–I want to be a kindergarten teacher at your school!! :crazyjumping: Dang.
But one of my lovelies bought me a $15 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Guess who’s getting an A in my class (okay, all right. She already had an A.)
Way to go on the pages!
