Dyeing Easter Eggs

Ah, 4:30 a.m. Gee, I love having babieswhodonotsleep(tm). :sleepy2:

Today my son will be coloring Easter Eggs for the first time. This should be interesting. My friends have all warned me not to get it on clothing. But I have a sneaking suspicion that the dye won’t work…that it will stain my kitchen table, my son’s face, but not the eggs with that nice little Use Before March 16 stamp on them. Who came up with that, anyway? My husband is obsessive-compulsive about expiration dates. Now, I don’t go around using rotten eggs in my cooking, but I’ve never had a problem with it before.

This is the man who throws out the milk on the date stamped on it. If meat is three days old, out it goes. God forbid you should eat it 4 days later.

And worst of all, he doesn’t want the kids to eat cookie dough and batter. Raw eggs, you know. Salmonella.

Personally, I think licking the cookie dough bowl is a critical part of childhood. If you’ve never sneaked a hunk of chocolate chip cookie dough or licked the brownie bowl (okay, AFTER you’ve poured the batter into the pan), you’re missing out.

So we sneak around. When my hubby is watching sports or reading the paper, I grab a spoonful and sneak it to my son. We conspire together. Chocoholics unite.

One of the finer points of being a mom, in spite of the 4:30 wake-up calls.

Oh, I’m very much the same as your husband when it comes to expiration dates, BUT… cookie dough out of the bowl? Yummm! People are definitely missing out if they’ve never had that. :)

  2. katie Says:

 You mean those dates are on there for a reason? Who woulda thought??

 (no reason, just like the smilie!)

Must. Eat. Cookie-dough. Out. Of. The. Bowl. It’s a requirement of childhood.

  4. katie Says:

And cake batter. My grandma used to have this horrible rubber spatula that would scrape every bit out of the bowl. Then she’d look up and see us and put some back in just so we could lick it.

    I just love that smilie….

  5. kacey Says:

Wow, look at the smilies now!! And eating cookie dough is like some rite of passage for childhood.

Now, my dh is the opposite of yours. He’ll eat stuff until it’s gone, no matter what the expiration date. I admit to sneaking in and throwing out stuff so he won’t eat it… but I’m sure not throwing out stuff on the exact date. More like a month later

You have to have cookie dough or cake mix out of the bowl when you’re a kid. It’s a rule or something!

    I love your smilies!!!

And bloodthirsty child that I am :D this is my favorite. :rambo:

I made Katie’s lemonade pie today and I just had to lick the spoon after I finished pouring out the batter.

They should make a smilie that licks spoons. Of course, it would probably look obscene.

  8. katie Says:

Did you love it, or is it for today? The lemonade pie?? I made a double batch and my gang gobbled it all yesterday. Along with everything else not nailed down…But I love them anyway.
Awww - what a shame - no heart/love smilie. So here’s to you!

OK, we are so bad in my house we make cookie dough and never cook it anymore. We scoop it into balls and freeze it for snacks later. However, we just started doing this when I learned about eggs, still in the shell that have been pasteurized so there is NO risk of salmonella. they are Davidson’s safest choice. you can check their web site for availability. http://www.safeeggs.com. Raw cookie dough…. the best!
